If the object count is a worry, you can try to cut the middle of the map out and either reduce the cave size, or just not include the cave. I'd recommend using the Skygrid on Sandbox for the maximum amount of build space. Sandtrap and Valhalla aren't exactly puny either. Remember, Avalanche is a remake of Sidewinder from Halo CE, and I'd even argue it's a little bigger than the CE counterpart. before the new object limit.I wouldn't necessarily say Halo 3 can't handle map sizes that big.
I look at a few btb maps in halo 3 and feel like they would be standard 4v4 maps in halo 2, in halo 3 sanctuary could probably be a btb map, i just want to see if blood gulch can be done.
